Sidney Holmes was sentenced to 400 years in prison but was released after serving more than 34 years of that time after the state of Florida reopened the case and found that he had not engaged in armed robbery.

A thorough re-investigation of the 1988 armed robbery case that resulted in Holmes' conviction "raised substantial doubts about his guilt," according to abcNEWS on Tuesday (14-March-2023).

According to Broward County State Attorney Harold F. Pryor.

Pryor said that Holmes was arrested in October 1988 for allegedly being the driver for two unidentified men who robbed a man and woman outside a store at gunpoint. The car of the male victim was stolen by two unidentified men.

He was found guilty by a jury in April 1989 and given a 400-year prison term. Prosecutors requested the judge to give him an 825-year prison term at the time.

The Conviction Review Unit found that aside from a mistaken identification of Holmes and the getaway car, there is no evidence connecting Holmes to the heist.
